Dear Adam

If you could write a letter to yourself as you started uni, what would you say?

Dear starting uni and excited-yet-nervous little Adam,

First of all, enjoy uni!

The next three years will absolutely fly by so take time to enjoy all the different experiences and opportunities, and a little heads up for you for freshers week – reel in the banter a bit. That’s one of the first lessons you will start to slowly learn at uni, but don’t worry – there are plenty more up ahead.

You’re going to learn how to smile, you’re going to learn what loss looks like, what love looks like, what pain looks like, what it actually means to trust God entirely and at some point you may even learn a bit about politics…

Take time to actually rest – you don’t have to be busy every single night of the week, you don’t have to be everyone’s best mate and you don’t have to feel bad about not being in every single club or society.

Invest in the people around you and take time to properly check in with them and hear their stories.

Embrace new experiences and ignore your worries, don’t be afraid to give things a go and mess things up from time to time, because – SPOILER ALERT – you will.

Don’t mess about in first term and take ages to find a church because you’re “too busy” going out or playing rugby, get stuck in early and give God all of your three years.

Similarly, this is probably the first time in your life where you are going to realise that people are actually interested in the fact that you love Jesus and want to know why you do, so go ahead and tell them.

Finally, we both know you’ve always secretly thought crutches are cool, but the reality is they are properly annoying, so if you get asked to play the last 20 minutes of one of your rugby games as flanker, just say no.

All the best mate – I know you’re gonna smash it,

Adam
