‘All who see them will acknowledge that they are a people the Lord has blessed...’ (Isaiah 61:9)
What does a blessed life look like? Much of the world would assert that wealth, health and happiness are central to a blessed life. However, if we are to take our lead from the one from whom all blessings flow it is worth remembering the teaching Jesus gave on who is blessed.
In the world’s most famous sermon, Jesus reserved God’s blessing for the poor, those who mourn, the meek, the hungry, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers and the persecuted. And whilst Jesus’ teaching conflicts with the world it chimes with the blessings in Isaiah 61.
What will people acknowledge?
Firstly, amidst the dire circumstances there is good news. For the poor, the broken, the captives and the prisoners there is freedom and salvation, the Spirit of the Lord is on them.
Secondly, amidst the devastation there is also purpose. The people the Lord has blessed get to participate in Kingdom work of eternal significance. Rebuilding, restoring and renewing the world.
Thirdly, amidst the grief and mourning there is joy. The people the Lord has blessed are promised of joy, healing, comfort and a double portion.
The Lord has blessed us and for others to see and acknowledge it we first have to see and acknowledge it. How has God blessed you?
In this season of Lent, are there things that need to be discarded in order to receive and acknowledge more of God’s blessing?
Augustine remarked ‘God is always trying to give good things to us, but our hands are too full to receive them.’
