For Scotland

Scotland, the country that has stolen my heart. Why wouldn't you want to live in a land where the men wear skirts, tossing massive tree trunks whilst yelling freedom.

The comments about the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony summed up everything it is to be Scottish; we love questions. Why it was too long, too cheesy, too much music, not enough music, why was John Barrowman in a kilt, on top of a bus, singing in a fake Scottish accent? As a Northern Irish girl and now an adoptive Scot I love a good complaining session. It rains too much, its too hot, why is there milk in my tea? Why can’t I afford a new stripy dress?

But since finishing university and working as a student worker my biggest question has been;  why do 99% of students who go to university have little or no connection with Jesus? And what on earth are we, the people who love Jesus and know his goodness and grace, doing about it?

My heart longs for the church in Scotland to be a people who take the call of student ministry seriously. To put student work at the forefront of what they do, to invest in the people who have a passion for seeing students discipled, equipped and released into all spheres of influence and to see students becoming confident in their faith and therefore passionate about their friends coming to know Jesus.

I hope to connect up with churches based in the cities and towns of universities in Scotland to help them think through the big questions that face all of us when dealing with students. And help churches sending young people off to universities prepare them for this crucial transition and get them connected into churches.

So I am inviting you, Scotland, to help turn my complaint into action. Together we can disciple christian students so they are secure in their identity in Christ because the local church cared. They won’t be able to stop speaking about Jesus and therefore thousands of students will encounter the love of Father God for the first time.
