Glitter Mission

A group of students from Cheltenham saw a need and did something about it. Check out the story of ‘Glitter Mission’…

I was part of a friendship group where the highlight of the week was going out clubbing and getting drunk. I loved going out, but I was stirred inside as I knew I had found something deeper in God.

This started me on a journey where I began to learn how important being a witness to those around us is. I learnt that I wanted people to know I loved Jesus because they noticed the way I lived, before I had even had a conversation to them about him.

I knew that being in uni is a time in life where we can witness to those around us who are the same age, in the same boat, all doing the same stuff! As a student, I can relate to students the most! So club life and learning towards ministry in that area seemed the way forward.

There was a group of us students who were all passionate about this. We got together and decided we didn’t want to passively linger outside a club. We wanted to be inside taking God to the heart of it all. We wanted to be on the inside with the people who needed help, and show them what having fun looks like too!

My friend had the idea of putting glitter on girls faces simply with Vaseline and glitter. Cheap, fun and everyone wanted it! This simple act opened up so many conversations with people! So we started doing this in the toilets of clubs. We stood there, offered girls glitter and told them we were just there to love them!

One evening, we bumped into the club manager and I just felt an urge to talk to him, telling him what we had been doing in his club. I told him we wanted to serve them in any way we could. Right there and then he offered us a free booth to use weekly, which was in a position that was visible to everyone. This moment was incredible and we all felt like God had literally placed this blessing in our hands.

So now, we are in that club every single week. We have a great booth with a banner saying ‘WE LOVE STUDENTS’. We help the club in any way like painting glitter on faces, cleaning toilets, snapping glow sticks- you name it, we do it!

What is incredible is the relationship we are building with the staff. They invited us to their staff do and even 3 people have come to church. One manager even told us, ‘please keep coming because what you are doing is so helpful’.

We are loving seeing a culture shift in that club. People are recognising that we are there to love them, have fun with them and just show them Jesus through the way we live and serve them. And it all started with a simple tub of Vaseline and glitter!
