The Doorman

"After you, Sir! Come on in”, said the doorman as he welcomed me to a nice hotel in London. I was going for coffee with a church leader and already felt more than a little out of place.

The doorman was a smartly dressed, tall and broad-shouldered man who bowed slightly as his reached for the door handle. He had a confident voice, a kind smile and an air of responsibility. During my meeting I noticed he walked through the hotel and went into an office marked "General Manager". I asked one of the waiters about him and discovered that he was, in fact, the manager.

He liked to spend about 20 minutes each day welcoming people and holding the door open for them. He said it was the biggest privilege in his day.

There is a passage in the Bible that says,

“Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.” (Psalm 84:10)

As a follower of Jesus Christ, the Servant King, my job is to be a doorkeeper in the house of God. To open the door and welcome people in. I’m not seeking honour or fame in this place. It’s enough for me to know that the King knows me personally and loves me. He is a King that is worth serving!

Let’s swing the doors open and welcome people in - let’s be the doorkeepers.
