Would you shake Jesus and shout in his face ‘don’t you care that I’m going to die?’
On the day the disciples and Jesus hit a massive storm the disciples didn’t even ask Jesus for help. (In Mark) When storms start to flood their boat, they just wake him up from his nap and have a go at him for not caring about them enough. Yet he astounded them not only by caring deeply, but by acting majestically.
How often are we frustrated that God isn’t sorting out our problems, are we worried that perhaps he’s not even watching? Do you freak out before you even ask? More importantly, perhaps, is your assumption when you don’t see him at work that he doesn’t care about you? Those are dangerous things to equate together. When his love for his disciples is called into question, Jesus stands up and immediately calms the storm. The disciples’ fear is perhaps not only rooted in the fact that he has great power, but that someone who has shown himself to love them so dearly should be the one to wield such power.
This year let’s not slip into the trap of assuming God doesn’t care when we are struggling with life. Jesus was gutted that what they had seen and heard so far still hadn’t convinced the disciples of his love and power. We have even more reason to have faith as we have the word of God and a full understanding of who Jesus is and what he went on to do. Let’s not neglect to ask when we need. Let’s ask with confidence in God’s immoveable, everlasting and self-sacrificial love for us. I pray that many storms for you may be calmed this year.
